Answer:

Feudal France was neatly divided into three social classes, or Estates, with different jobs and privileges. The clergy was the First Estate, the nobles were the Second Estate, and the peasants were the Third Estate. The Third Estate was the largest but had few rights at all.

At the time of French revolution , the society was divided into several estates.

1st estate Clergy

2nd estate Nobility

3rd estate common man

the first estate Clergy had enjoyed all the privileges and power . they did not have any taxes instead they take taxes form the third estate , called tithes. the second estate Nobility was same like Clergy. they also enjoyed all the privileges and powers. they also take taxes called taille from the third estate. the third estate had not such privileges and powers like Clergy and Nobility. they were supposed to give taxes to the government as well as Clergy and Nobility.

so we can say that the society was backward at the time of French revolution.
