Ladakh is a high-altitude plateau, with rugged topography.

The terrain is undulating and therefore susceptible to soil erosion and water wastage. When snow melts in the upper reaches, the water flowing down, washes away much of the top soil. To curb this erosion and water wastage, earth/stone fortifications (gabions) are put up in places. Check dams and efficient water-shed management, help control water flow to a certain extent, preventing washing away of soil and helping to conserve water.

Further, soil-binding vegetation and embankments on slopes, help to prevent unchecked flow of water and erosion.
