Explanation:

In Western ghats laterite and red soils are found most and let us discuss about their formations

Laterite soil:

This rock is rich in iron and aluminium and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas

Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and prolonged weathering of the underlying parent rock

Red soil:

They are having thin organic and in-organic layers overlying a yellowish-brown leached layer resting on an illuvium red layer.

Generally they are derived from crystalline rocks

The formation of soil found in the western part of the western ghats is a composition of red, laterite and black soil.

Explanation

  • Developed on the crystalline, the red soil appears to be brown, grey and black in appearance however the soil is deficient of organic matters mostly in nitrogen and phosphoric acid.
  • The reason due to difference in colour is due to the presence of iron in very high amount, grey due to titanium and aluminium while black is due to the presence of oxides of manganese.
  • While formed out of the Deccan lava the black soil are formed which has enough of lime and potash.
  • From the eroded edges of the Deccan plateau mountains were faulted million years ago as a break out from the super continent.
  • The laterite and humid soil found in that very part of the country are  red in colour and formed from as a part of Deccan plateau.
