  • Spirogyra is free floating filamentous fresh water green algae.
  • They are capable of producing their food by photosynthesis.
  • It reproduces by asexual method of reproduction called fragmentation.
  • Fragmentation involves the breaking up of body filaments into two or more small parts called fragments.
  • Each fragment undergoes intercalary cell division (mitosis) and forms a new individual.  
  • Mitosis is a type of cell division which involves the formation of daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as in the parent cell.
  • As Spirogyra is small in size , capable of growing by available resources  and asexually reproduce by fragmentation followed by mitosis , they grow rapidly and cover a large area in short period.
