In Wastewater management or Sewage treatment the first stage or the primary treatment is the process of getting clarified water from wastewater. In the first stage called the primary treatment, the following steps are followed:

1. The sewage in pàssed through coarse screens or sieves. Large objects like cans, plastic packets, rags, and sticks are removed.
2. The liquid is then pássed through a tank which removes grit and sand
3. The water is then pàssed through settling or sedimentation tanks. The tank is sloped towards its centre. Solids like faeces settle at the bottom and this is called sludge. Sludge is removed with a scraper. The floating materials like oil and grease are removed by a skimmer. Water so obtained after scraping and skimming is called clarified water.

The second stage also known as the secondary treatment consists of treating the sludge (received after the first stage) with anaerobic bacteria (the bacteria breaks it down into harmless substances). After the completion of this stage, foul smell is no more present. The clarified water is also treated in the secondary treatment. Air is pumped into the clarified water so that aerobic bacteria can grow.

The third stage also known as tertiary treatment consists the treating of clarified water with chlorine (chlorination) so as to kill disease-causing organisms. Disinfection can also be done by the use of ozone. The water now can be released into the distribution system.
