Describe the steps involved in obtaining biogas and explain what is meant by anaerobic decomposition
Answers
The process by which the bio-mass changes into biogas in the absence of air due to an anaerobic bacteria is termed as an anaerobic decomposition.
Biogas is a production of methane which is used as fuel, via fermentation of organic matter.
There are 3 major steps involved in biogas production:
-Hydrolysis: In this step, break down of large organic molecules such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids into simpler units with the help of enzyme take place, externally.
- Fermentation: In this step, fermentation of intermediates of organic compounds takes place. In this step, products like volatile organic acids, alcohols, amino acids, CO2 are produced which are later on used as ingredients for the step next.
-Methane formation: In this step, methane producing bacteria decompose compounds completely and produce methane (biogas).
Anaerobic decomposition is a process of breaking down organic material with the help of micro-organisms in the absence of air.
