Members of a Vidhan Sabha are referred to as MLAs and are directly elected to serve 5 year terms by single-member constituencies. In 14 states the Governor of a state may appoint one Anglo-Indian MLA to their respective states Vidhan Sabha in accordance with the 23rd Amendment of the Constitution of India.

The election of Vidhan Sabha are conducted by Election Commission of India . State Governer issues notification of the election as per the timeline of election schedule finalised by ECI in phases if so. Then various processes of election like filing of nomination, scrutiny , withdrawal of nomination and publishing the final list. The expenditure and other issues of implementation are monitored through observers appointed by the commission. Security, training of polling officers etc is decided by the commission in consultation with Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the deployment etc is decided by the commission. The persons related to election duty are treated as employees of the commission during the process. The polling is held on due date and timing decided by the commission. They can order repolling in some or all the booths of the booths of a constituency. Finally counting is done on the appointed date and result is declared. After the election results Commission notified the results. On the basis of results Governer invites the person who has majority support of MLAs and the designated CM after taking oath decided the date of session of the Vidhan Sabha. Governor normally appoint senior most member as protein speaker who administer the oath to mbers and conduct the election of speaker and deputy speaker. The CM also obtain the vote of confidence within the stipulated time fixed by Governor.
