The Constituent Assembly of India is a body of members appointed to form the Constitution of India. It had 217 members and was formed in 1947.
It approved the draft of the Constitution of India in November, 1949 and the constitution came into force on 26th January, 1950.
The characteristics of the Constituent Assembly were:
1. Only Indian Members were taken in the assembly.
2. The approach of Idealism was followed to set up the assembly.
3. There was seen an extra sense of unity among the members of the assembly.

- The election to elect the constituent assembly member was held on July 1946.
- After visiting to many countries, a document called Constitution was drafted by "elected representatives" of the constituent assembly.
- The first meeting related to the "constituent assembly" was held in December 1946.
- Later to this, the country was divided into India and Pakistan.
- The assembly was also partitioned as "Constituent Assembly of India" and "Constituent Assembly of Pakistan".
- Though the assembly adopted the "constitution" in 1949, it was made into effect on the date 26th January 1950. This day is celebrated as "Republic day" all over India."
