Panipat was the scene of three pivotal battles in Indian history. The First Battle of Panipat was fought on 21 April 1526 between Ibrahim Lodhi, Sultan of Delhi, and the Timurid warlord Zaheeruddin Babur. Babur's force defeated Ibrahim's much larger force of over one lakh (one hundred thousand) soldiers.
It marked the beginning of the Mughal Empire. This was one of the earliest battles involving gunpowder firearms and field artillery.
Panipat was lost by the divide between India and Indians. The politicos of the Maratha court conspired to send Sadashiv Bhau to his defeat. Many of the Maratha allies backed out at the last moment (in part due to the arrogance and obstinacy of Sadashiv Bhau) and so many Indian rulers conspired to defeat them.
