Summary:

The story is about a man named Private Quelch who liked to show off his knowledge and irritated his peers or superiors. The narrator and his friends also gave him nickname 'Professor' due his lanky body and bespectacled looks. Actually Private Quelch meant to acquire a stripe and to get commission. In pursuit of his ambition he worked really hard and tried to impress his superiors. However, due to his habit of interrupting seniors he was nominated for permanent cookhouse duties by Corporal Turnbull.

Corporal Turnbull was a young man. He was a man not to be trifled with. He had returned from Dunkirk with all his equipment correct and accounted for. In one of his lectures, Corporal Turnbull was explaining that the outside of a grenade was divided up into large number of fragments. The Professor at once told that the correct number was forty four. He didn’t like his interruption and punished him by sending the Professor to cookhouse.

There are also many incidents in the story, when Private Quelch tried to outshine his fellow soldiers and the narrator. One such incident was aircraft recognition. The Professor left his fellow soldiers surprised when he named an aircraft by its sound. Another such incident was during the first lesson in musketry. A sergeant was explaining about muzzle velocity. The Professor interrupted and told the exact speed the bullet leaves the rifle. The sergeant didn’t take it kindly.

The story ends with a light note with Private Quelch lecturing his fellow soldiers in the kitchen on how to cut potato without its vitamin values getting wasted.

Hope it helps you.
