Metalloprotein is a generic term for a proteinthat contains a metal ion cofactor.[1][2] A large number of all proteins are part of this category. For instance, at least 1000 human proteins (out of ~20,000) contain zinc-binding protein domains although there may be up to 3000 human zinc metalloproteins.

Metalloprotein is the generic term for a protein which has a metal ion cofactor within itself. Metalloproteins have various functions in cells, like the enzymes, transport and storage proteins, and signal transduction proteins.

The metal ion is basically helped by nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur atoms which belongs to amino acids in the polypeptide chain.

It may or may not contain a macro cyclic ligand which may be incorporated into the protein membrane.
