Structure and function of rib cage:-

The rib cage consists of 12 pairs of ribs, sternum, xiphoid process, costal cartilages, and 12 thoracic vertebrae. It protects the heart, lungs, and diaphragm. It provides a framework on which the muscles of the shoulder girdle, chest, upper abdomen, and back can attach. It also plays important role in respiration.
