The stomata are small pores in the leaves of plants.

  • The stomata are minute pores present on the epidermis of leaves. They are abundantly found on the lower or abaxial surface of leaves.
  • Guard cells which are bean-shaped cells surround the stomata in the leaves. The turgidity of the guard cells determines the opening and closing of the stomata.
  • The main function of the stomata is the exchange of gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide between the plant and the atmosphere. Sometimes, excess water is lost in the form of vapour through the stomata by transpiration.
