The structure and function of the two types of endoplasmic reticulum are :-

Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER):-

☛ RER mainly consist of cisternae.

☛ Ribosomes are attached on it's outer surface.

☛ Helps in synthesis of protein due to the present of Ribosomes.

☛ It is well developed in cells and in specialised to synthesis protein.

☛ It is present in exocrine pancreatic cells and antibodies secreting plasma cells.

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER):-

☛ SER mainly consist of tubules and vesicles.

☛ Ribosome are not present on its surface.

☛ It is well developed in cells and is specialised to synthesis lipids, steroids.

☛ Production of harmones.

☛ storage of calcium ion that help in muscles contraction.
