Ectocarpus reproduces by both asexual and sexual methods. The asexual reproduction takes place by the formation of biflagellate zompores. These zoospores may be haploid produced in one-celled unilocular sporangia. Both kinds of sporangia are present on the same diploid sporophyte plant.
