structure of a mitochondrion

(i) structurally, a mitochondrion consists of two membranes, an outer limiting membrane and an inner membrane.

(ii) the inner membrane is most frequently convoluted to form a large number of infoldings called cristae Or mitochondrial crests.

(iii) the membranes of the mitochondrion separate it into two distinct compartment.

(iv)the mitochondrial matrix contains most of the enzymes of krebs cycle.

(v) the inner compartment, also called mitochondrial chamber, is bound by the inner membrane.

Function:-

they are seat for cellular respiration and produce energy in the form of ATP(I.e. cellular currency) needed for cellular functions. thus they are called power house.
