The female gametophyte develops within the ovule and generally consists of three antipodal cells, one central cell, two synergid cells, and one egg cell. The female gametophyte is also commonly called the embryo sac or megagametophyte. The ovule, which carries the female gametophyte, is located in the part of the carpel (the female organ of a flower) known as the ovary, which ultimately becomes the fruit. Depending on the plant, flowers can have one or multiple ovules per ovary.
