the Powerhouse
Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell. They are organelles that act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy rich molecules for the cell. The biochemical processes of the cell are known as cellular respiration. Many of the reactions involved in cellular respiration happen in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are the working organelles that keep the cell full of energy.

These are oval or rod shaped structures scattered throughout the cytoplasm and are surrounded by double membrane. The inner membrane I thrown into folds called cristae that serves to increase its surface area. On the walls of the cristaeb, food (glucose) Is combined with oxygen to p4oduce produce ATP( adenosine triphosphate) -primary energy source of the cell. In other words Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell, converting chemical energy stored in food into readily usable biological energy.
