describe the structure of Mitochondria with special reference to its membrane covering
Answers
Answer:-
Structure of Mitochondria:-
Mitochondria is a double membrane bound cell organelle. It is present in both animal and plant cells. The inner membrane forms a number of folds, called cristae, projecting towards the mitochondrial chamber. The inner chamber is filled with matrix which is a dense fluid and the outer chamber is smooth. It contains a number of respiratory enzymes, proteins, ribosome, lipids and DNA.
Functions of Mitochondria:-
•Mitochondria contains all enzymes necessary for the oxidation of food. By this process, energy is released and stored in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate). Hence, Mitochondria is also called as the power house of the cell.
•It helps in metabolism of fatty acids.
• It synthesizes cytochromes and many other biomolecules.
•Mitochondria can synthesize amino acids to make their own protein.
