Urban local bodies comes under municipalities. Urban local bodies means towns, cities, metropolitan areas. Urban local bodies governance has 3 tier structure, i.e.

Municipal corporation (larger towns or cities where polpulation of that area croses 10 lakhs)

Municipal councils (smaller towns where population is below 10 lakhs)

Nagar panchayats (these are smaller towns which are in the process of transforming rural area to urban area).

Each municipality is divided into wards. Number wards in that municipality depends on the population of that particular area, more population means more wards. Each ward has ward members, who are the elected people from that particular area.

Election:

Muncipality elections are conducted by state election commission once in every 5 years. Minimum age for contest as a ward member is 21 years.

Ward members are directly elected by the people through voting. All the ward members in the municipality are headed by mayors. Mayor of the municipality is elected by all the ward members of that respected municipality through voting, this method of voting is called indirect voting. Mayors are also elected by direct voting, it means people of that particular area have the right to elect both ward member and mayor through direct voting. Municipal corporations are headed by the commissioner who is a real executive and the mayor is nominal.
