The suitors who came to meet Portia are as follows:
- First came the Neapolitan prince. He was a colt who would only talk of his horses. He thought that it was an achievement that he could shoe his horses himself.
- The County Palatine would do nothing except frown. He would hear merry tales but not smile. According to Portia, he would become the 'weeping philosopher' in his old age. Portia would marry a skull with a bone in its mouth than marry this suitor.
- The French lord, Monsieur Le Bon was twenty men in one man. He has a worse habit than the Neapolitan prince and the County. If a bird sings, he will start dancing immediately, and he will fence with his own shadow. If he were to love Portia, she would never be able to return it.
- Portia cannot understand Falconbridge, the young baron of England. He does not know Latin, Italian, or French, and Portia does not know English. It seems as if his clothes are from the world- doublet from Italy, round hose from France, and his bonnet from Germany.
- The Scottish lord had a neighborly charity in him. He would take help from the Frenchman and also pay him back under his surety.
- The Duke of Saxony's nephew is a drunkard. When he is not drunk, he is a little worse than a man. When he is drunk, he is a little better than a beast.
Portia's hand in marriage was to be won by choosing from the three caskets of gold, silver, and lead. However, these men did not want to choose from the three caskets. This was because if they chose wrong, they would not be able to speak to any women in the future. They wanted to look for another way of marrying her. Hence they returned home.
