The British took a number of steps to curb the nationalists,

such as  -

1. In 1919, they passed the Rowlatt Act. It gave the power

to the Government to repress political activities in India. The Act permitted the

detention of political prisoners without trial for 2 years.

2. Whenever a mass movement was launched by the nationalists,

the British imposed martial law. For instance, the satyagrahis were humiliated

and flogged during the Rowlatt Satyagraha, Non-cooperation movement and the

Civil Disobedience movement.  The

demonstrators were forced to crawl on the streets, rub their noses on the

ground, and do salaam to all the sahibs. The British even bombed certain areas.

3. The nationalist leaders of the mass movements were

arrested by the British and put behind the bars. For instance, Mahatma Gandhi,

Abdul Ghaffar Khan and other leaders were arrested during the Civil

Disobedience movement.
