The members of the Court are referred to as “justices” and, like other federal judges, they are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate for a life term. There are nine justices on the court – eight associate justices and one chief justice.

The Collegium system is one where the Chief Justice of India and a forum of four Senior- most Judges of the Supreme Court recommend appointments and transfer of judges. However, it has no place in the Indian Constitution. The system was evolved through Supreme Court judgments in the – Three judges cases
