The lesson gift of the magi describes the selfless love between a couple. The couple loved each other so much that they sold their proud possessions to buy a gift for each other. But the gifts of both of them turned out to be useless for each other. They then understood that the material gift was of no use but their love was worthless and can't be expressed by any objects. So they kept aside those gifts and enjoyed the festival together with love.
Therefore, the love is immortal and worthless. It can never be expressed with any nonliving object.
