The thief was Hari Singh. The ordeal that he faced last night was dreadful and changed him completely. What happened was earlier he thought that Anil, earned a lot of money to pay him(Hari) but did not pay him. He saw that he used to take his earned money and used to go to party that day. And that is why Hari thought to steal or rob off Anil by taking a clutch of money from him that night. He ran steadfast to the Railway station and did not pay for the ticket (although he had enough money he had never buyed a ticket because he was a thief). He thought with 600 rupees he could live like an Arab for week or two. But a little hesitation occured and he missed the train. Unable , he thought to return back to Anil just to read and Write. He sat under clocktower and shivered which had also drenched Anil's money.
