The three important features of the Mahanadi Basin are as follows:
Mahanadi emerged from Sihava in the hills of Chhattisgarh state between Central India. This is a famous river which is also called as 'the bereavement of Orissa'
Through this river 58.48 percent water of the total area is collected.
In Sambalpur , the Hirakund dam is built on this river which has resulted in 55-kilometer of artificial lake. There are also several hydroelectric plants in this dam
