In fact there are three deserts on the continent - The Sahara, the Namib and the Kalahari. Together these three amazingly vast and diverse land masses cover a large portion of Africa.

1. The Sahara Desert: This desert is a part of a low land plateau. It is the largest and hottest desert in the world. It extends from the Atlantic in the west to the Red Sea in the east and covering the area of 8.6 million sq.km.
2. The Namib Desert: This desert runs along the western coast in south-west Africa. It is the oldest and most arid desert in the world.
3. The Kalahari Desert: This desert lies in the southern part of Africa. It is a semi-arid desert and has more vegetation and wildlife. Mt Kilimanjaro, a snow-capped mountain near the equator, lies in this plateau.
