Describe the trend in the litracy rate in India over the last decade

India has a very low literacy rate as compared to world average and its neighboring countries. There has been a continuous growth in the literacy
rate, but it has not achieved the mark yet. There is a huge gender disparity among the female literacy rate and male literacy rate. According to census 2001, the national literacy rate of India was 64.81 % with female literacy rate at 53.66% and male literacy rate at 75.24%.The gender disparity was 21.58%. There has been a substantial growth in the literacy rate of India. According to census 2011 the national literacy rate grew up to 74.04%. There has been a decade growth of 9.2%. The gap between female literacy has also come down to 16.68%. The female literacy rate as on census 2011 was 65.46% whereas male literacy rate stood at 82.14%. Though the gap is narrowing down, there is still a wide gap among male and female literacy rates. Among states, Kerala tops the list with in both the census with 92.19% in 2001 and 93.91% in 2011. Whereas Bihar comes last on the list in both the census with 47% in census 2001 and 63.8% in 2011.
