1. Aerobic Respiration

the respiration which uses oxygen is called aerobic respiration. It is called aerobic respiration because it uses air which contains oxygen ('aerobic' means 'with air').

The Glucose food is completely broken down into carbon dioxide and water by oxidation.

\displaystyle\sf {C_6 H_{12} O_6 \underset{(in\:cytoplasm)}{\xrightarrow{Glycolysis}} 2 C_3 H_4 O_3 \underset{(in\: mitochondria)}{\xrightarrow{Oxygen\:(Kreb's\:cycle)}} 6CO_2 + 6H_2O + 38\: ATP}

  • Mitochondria are the sites of aerobic respiration in the cells. Thus, the breakdown of pyruvate to give carbon dioxide, water and energy takes place in mitochondria.

2. Anaerobic respiration

the respiration which takes place without oxygen is called anaerobic respiration. it is called an anaerobic respiration because it takes place without air which contains oxygen. ('anaerobic' means 'without air').

the microorganisms like yeast break down glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide, release energy.

\displaystyle\sf { C_6H_{12}O_6 \underset{(in\:cytoplasm)}{\xrightarrow{Glycolysis}} 2 C_3 H_4 O_3 \underset{(Yeast)}{\xrightarrow{(in\:absence\:of\:oxygen)}} 2 C_2H_5OH + 2CO_2 + 2 \: ATP}
