Secondary memory is of three types : solid state storage, optical storage devices, and Magnetic storage devices.

• Secondary memory may be referred to as the non-volatile or permanent memory, Secondary memory is also known as External memory or auxiliary storage.

• Solid State storage : These kind of secondary memory are made up of silicon microchips and can be written over again and again. Example- USB memory sticks.

• Magnetic Devices : Hard discs are the most common examples of this kind of storage devices. Hard disc drives use magnetic field to magnetize individual sections of a metallic spinning disc. Every magnetized section represents a bit.

• Optical Devices :These make use of laser to scan the surface of a spinning plastic or metallic disc. Examples are CD's. DVD's and Blu-Ray discs.
