Barrel cactus: many people believe that barrel cactus contains water but it is not true. it is filled with slimy alkaline juice. Native americans use it's sharp hooked spines as fish hooks.
Desert sage: also known as the wooly sage. grows in soil with high soil content. it is native to california.
Palm trees: Palmyra trees are native to africa and prefer well drained soil and do note take cold very well. the fruit is large weighing 6 pounds. once you remove the outer skin you will find a mass sweet smelling orange flesh

Answer:
Long and severe winters do not allow any substantial plant growth. A few stunted trees are found like willow, birch and alder bordering the taiga forests. Mosses and lichens grow in summers which are very short.
