- General elections- These elections take place all over the country at the same time period, to form a new government at the Centre.
- Mid-term elections- These elections take place when No-Confidence Motion has been passed against the government in the Lok Sabha.
- By-elections - These elections take place due to the sudden death or resignation of an elected representative in any particular constituency.

- Article 324 of the Constitution provides for an independent Election Commission in order to ensure free and fair elections in the country.
