Describe the variable oxidation states shown by sulphur

Sulphur shows variable oxidation numbers...this can be proved.

Take H2SO4, where oxidation number of S is +6.

Now take SO2, where oxidation number of S is +4.

Take H2SO3, where oxidation number of S is +4.

etc.
