Resources can be classified in the following ways–

(a) On the basis of origin – biotic and abiotic. Eg- Biotic- flora and fauna & Abiotic- Rocks and minerals.

(b) On the basis of exhaustibility – renewable and non-renewable. Eg - renewable- solar and wind energy &non-renewable- fossil fuels.

(c) On the basis of ownership – individual, community, national and international. Eg- individual- house, own vehicle , community-grazing grounds, village ponds

international- ocean resources beyond 200 km of EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONE.

(d) On the basis of status of development – potential, developed stock and reserves.

  • potential resources -which are found in a region,but have not been utilized. Eg- potential resources are wind and solar energy can be generated in the parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat but their use had not been started.
  • developed resources -coal,petroleum,mineral oil ,iron ore,bauxite etc.
  • stock resources-The example of stock is water, as it consists of Oxygen and Hydrogen.
  • The example of reserve resource- An individual keep water in a dam in order to fulfill the requirements of energy associated with future.
