Nutritional assessment is the interpretation of anthropometric, biochemical (laboratory), clinical and dietary data to determine whether a person or groups of people are well nourished or malnourished (over-nourished or under-nourished). Nutritional assessment can be done using the ABCD methods. A comprehensive nutritional assessment includes (1) anthropometric measurements of body composition; (2) biochemical measurements of serum protein, micronutrients, and metabolic parameters; (3) clinical assessment of altered nutritional requirements and social or psychological issues that may preclude adequate intake;Nutritional status of an individual is generally dependent on two factors, external factors such as food safety, cultural, social, economical factors and internal factors, which include age, sex, nutrition, behavior, physical activity and diseases of the person.
The various methods of assessing nutritional status of a person are :
- Separate carbohydrate, vitamins, proteins and fat blood check-up to notice any abnormalities.
- To check the patients records for any previous or existing illness which may cause him/her to compromise on his/her health and nutritional requirements.
- A proper full body height & weight measurement and check up to look for lipomas or any other impending nutritional deficiency.
- Checking the patients diet history to see if they are consuming proper meals.
- A psych evaluation to check for eating disorders or any other mental health issues which they patient might try to control using food as a mean to do so.
