There were riots in rural England in the year 1830, caused by the dissatisfaction of farm workers over low wages. Introduction of threshing machines also reduced the need for farm workers. In these circumstances, threatening letters were sent to local magistrates and wealthy farmers, asking for rise in wages and destruction of threshing machines. The letters were often signed by the name ‘Captain Swing’. Thus, people used the rioters, who were mostly farm workers, used it as a collective identity to place their grievances. The name was derived from people hanging from the gallows in swinging fashion. However, no was killed during these riots.
