According to Mriganko Babu on the western side of the road, there was a pond about forty feet away.

Explanation:

  1. There was a pond approximately forty feet from the road on the western side. There were two huts, but no one was around.
  2. A scarecrow stood in the midst of the field, alongside a Mriganko. The scarecrow was wearing a painted shirt, which Babu noticed.
  3. That tattered, crimson, and black patterned shirt reminded him of something he'd seen previously. But he couldn't recall it. He was certain, though, that he had seen someone wearing such a garment before.
