The process of the election of the Indian Prime Minister is fairly simple. India is a parliamentary democracy following the
Westminster system and is governed by a Prime Minster and his Council of Ministers. India has a bicameral central legislature with two houses of Parliament named the Lok Sabha (translates to Assembly of People) and Rajya Sabha (translates to Assembly of States). The elections for the Lok Sabha are held every five years (they can be held earlier it but that is out of context for this question).
The Prime Minster is any Member of Parliament who enjoys the support of more than 50% of the Lok Sabha members. After the elections for the Lok Sabha the Indian President (the titular head of the Indian State) invites the leader of the leader of the largest political party in the Lok Sabha (i.e. the party with the largest number of members in the Lok Sabha) to form a government.
The leader then must prove on the floor of the Lok Sabha that he has a support of more than 50% members of the Lok Sabha currently the number is 272. If the leader is able to prove that he enjoys the support of the majority then he is sworn in as Prime Minster and can then appoint a council of ministers to assit him.
If no single party is able to get more than 50% of the seats in the Lok Sabha then the concept of Coalition government comes into existence.
