(i) Doctrine of Lapse - A king, whose kingdom is in alliance with the British, dies without a natural heir then the kingdom will be annexed by the British. This policy was called Doctrine of Lapse.
Ex - The British annexed Jhansi, Nagpur, Satara through Doctrine of Lapse.
(ii) Misgovernment - In this policy, the British accused the rulers of not governing their territories properly.
Ex - Awadh was annexed by this policy.
