Explanation:

In Thomson's model, the atom is composed of electrons surrounded by a soup of positive charge to balance the electrons' negative charges, like negatively charged “plums” surrounded by positively charged “pudding”. The 1904 Thomson model was disproved by Hans Geiger's and Ernest Marsden's 1909 gold foil experiment.

Thomson's Model of Atom :

  • Thomson was first to propose a detailed model of Atom.

  • His Atomic model was proposed in 1904.

  • He proposed that atom consists of a uniform sphere of positive charge in which the electrons are distributed more or less uniformly.

  • This model is also known as "Plum- Pudding Model" or "Watermelon model"

  • Thomson named the negatively charged particles as "negatrons" which were later named as electron by Stoney.

Draw backs:

  • This model proposed that mass of the atom is evenly spread over that atom, which isn't correct.

  • It's a static model.

  • It failed to show the movement of electrons.
