Thomson assumed that an atom is a uniform sphere of positive charges with electrons embedded in it.
The atom may thus be visualized as pudding or cake of positive charges with raisins(electrons) embedded in it. This model of atom later came to be known as the 'raisin pudding' model or 'water mellon' model.
This model explianed the electrical neutrality of atom, but failed to explain how these fundamental particles were arranged in the atom, especially the free positive and negative charges so close to each other.
