Thomson discovered the electrons by proposing the plum pudding model. Protons were absent in the model.According to him, the atoms were composed of electrons. This model, was like a pudding in which electrons acted as plum and nucleus was the pudding.

Question :-

Describe Thomson's model of the atom. Which subatomic particle was not present in Thomson model of the atom ?

Answer :-

Thomson's Model of Atom :

⬛ Thomson's model of the atom was the first model.

⬛ He said that atom is a sphere of positive charge.

⬛ According to him, electrons (negative charges) were embedded in the positive sphere.

⬛ He compared an atom to a Christmas pudding.

⬛ The pudding was said to be the positive sphere of the atom and the dry fruits in it was compared to the negative charges or the electrons.

⬛ We can also compare this mod of an atom with a watermelon.

⬛ The red part part of the watermelon can be said the positive sphere.

⬛ Whereas, the seeds of the watermelon embedded allover the red part can be said to be the electrons.

He concluded with result as:

⚫An atom is a positive sphere embedded with electrons.

⚫The magnitude of positive charges and negative charges are equal, making an atom electrically neutral.

➡ The subatomic particle was not present in Thomson Model : Neutrons.
