The sundial - the time could only be reckoned during the day, and not during the night.
The hour glass - which was a glass container having a measured quantity of sand that would fall down through a small opening due to gravity into the lower container. The trouble was, one slave had to be awake all the time to turn the hour glass each time the upper chamber was empty. If he was careless or dozed off, he would have lost time in inverting the hour glass and there was no way of knowing how much time was lost during that interval.
The burning candle - candles were lit and the markings on the candle revealed when an hour had passed. It was not possible to determine short periods like 1/12th of an hour (which is 5 minutes) and lesser periods.
