various substances are required by the plants for their growth , development and maintanence of metabolism. co2 and o2 are needed for photosynthesis and respiration respectively and these are taken from soil by roots and these are supplied to all other plant parts. food is produced in leaves and it is also supplied to all other parts so that each part can get energy.

if plants size is small then food , water and minerals can be easily be transported from one to another plant parts by simple diffusion but in large plants is not sufficient to transport the substances . thus, large plants need specific  transport system for the supply of food , water and minerals . in plants substances are transported by the vascular tissue that is xylem which transports water and mineral and phloem which transports food.

hope it helps!!!
