The two major literary sources of the Medieval Period are inscriptions and edicts , and chronicles and accounts.

Inscriptions and edicts are important sources of Medieval history. Most of them are in the form of royal orders.Inscriptions from South India contain proclamations by Kings and gifts to temples and learned men. Some are seen on copper plates or temple walls

During the Medieval Period, a number of chronicles and accounts texts were written. Among the early works of this period. Alberuni's Tahqiq-i-Hind, Kalhan's Rajtarangini and Chandabardai's Pritiviraj Raso are important. Alberuni was a scholar from Central Asia, who came to India in the eleventh century. His Tahqiq-i-Hind, written in Arabic, is a detailed account of Indian people, religious, customs, practices, languages, etc. Rajtarangini is the history of the Kings of Kashmir from ancient times to the early Medieval Period. Pritiviraj Raso describes the bravery and courage of the Chahamana ruler of Ajmer and Delhi, Pritiviraj Chauhan.
