Nutrients are the components found in our food such as carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fats etc. These components are necessary for living organisms to survive. Plants produce their own food while animals and human beings do not produce their own food. We indirectly or directly depend on plants and animals for our food needs.

Two modes of nutrition:

Autotrophic:

Kind of nutrition in which inorganic materials like CO2, water, etc. are utilised to prepare organic food by the process of photosynthesis.

Example: Green Plants.

Heterotrophic:

Kind of nutrition in which organisms do not possess the ability to synthesise their own food. They depend on autotrophs for their food supply directly or indirectly. Example: Animals, fungi.
