BODY SYMMETRY -
- Body symmetry is the balanced distribution of duplicate body parts.
- Organisms can be divided into three categories based on body symmetry as -
1. Asymmetry
- Animals with no or disproportionate body plan.
- Example - Porifera, Flounder fish.
2. Radial symmetry
- The body parts are along the central axis.
- The two halves formed along the axis are mirror images of each other.
- The two parts are described as one side having a mouth and the other is without the mouth.
- Example - Sea anemone, Ctenophores.
3. Bilateral symmetry
- Body division in two halves along the sagittal plane.
- The symmetry has head and tail with dorsal and ventral side and front and backside.
- The organisms have organised nervous system at the anterior end leading to the cephalization.
- Example - Butterfly, Echinodermata.
