urea cycle is a cycle of biochemical reactions that produces urea (NH₂)₂CO from ammonia. This cycle occurs in ureotelic organisms. The urea cycle converts highly toxic ammonia to urea for excretion. The first two steps of the urea cycle occur in the mitochondria of the cell. First, the enzyme carbamoyl phosphate synthetase (CPS) takes ammonia and bicarbonate, and forms carbamoyl phosphate with the use of ATP. This is the step in the cycle which determines how fast the cycle progresses.
