Broadly speaking, you can split the US involvement up into a few different parts. The first would be Lend Lease. America styled itself as the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’. Tens of thousands of tonnes of equipment, weapons, vehicles and supplies flowed from America it it’s Allies in Britain, the Commonwealth, France, and the USSR (amongst others). About 670 billion dollars worth of aid, in contemporary dollars.

Prior to this point, they openly supplied Allied countries like Britain, but under ostensibly commercial designs and trade terms rather than as explicit aid to a military ally. This was about as far as Roosevelt could get away with given the then isolationism presently gripping the American people.

Secondly, they were the keystone of the campaign against Japan. The Pacific War was primarily an American affair, with critical victories at the Coral Sea, Midway, Gundalcanal and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Simultaneous land campaigns rolled back Japanese holdings, and combined with commerce raiding and heavy strategic bombing (culminating in the deployment of two nuclear bombs), eliminated Japan from the war.

Ground operations for the USA began in North Africa, giving essential equipment and military aid at a crucial juncture to the British and their allies, ensuring that the German/Italians were ejected from the Mediterranean. Shortly after this, the US/British forces invaded Sicily and later, Italy itself, drawing millions of Axis troops and ultimately resulting in the defeat of Italy.

While all this was going on, a massive strategic bombing campaign was being launched, alongside the British, targeting German factories, ports, transportation hubs, and any sort of industrial or war material nexus. About 3 million tonnes of bombs were dropped in Europe by the Allies, with Britain and America contributing similarly to the total.

And of course, there was the Invasion of France. On the 6th of June, 1944, the British, American, and Canadian land forces returned to western Europe, invading at Normandy, and opening another front in addition to the Eastern and Italian fronts, this campaign ultimately resulting in the liberation of France and the Low Countries, and ending with the invasion and surrender of Germany itself.

America also played an important role in technological development, cryptography, and particularly the Manhattan project.

The world War II(1939 TO 1945) had begun when Germany attacked Poland. US came into the scene only when The japanese attacked the American Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This incident took place on 7th December 1941 and the very next day i.e 8th December 1941, United States declared war on the axis powers.

Three reasons why the USA joined the Second World War were

1. The growing threat to freedom and democracy by the combined onslaught of Germany and Japan.
2. The desperate situation of the United Kingdom which was fighting Germany virtually alone in Europe. The USA had to step in to help the UK.
3. The attack on Pearl Harbour by Japan.
