Political parties preform number of function in a democratic States these are as follows:-

➝ To contest election :- In most democracies, elections are fought mainly among the political parties show the candidates put up by them. They put up candidates for the elections and try to get them elected.

➝ Different policies & programmes :- Different political parties put up their programmes before the voters. In democracy, people hold different views on, what policies are useful for the society and the country. Political parties group various opinion together and provide on what policies should be framed by the government.

Note:- a government is supposed to frame its policies on the line taken by the ruling party.

➝ Role in making laws for the country :- laws are passed by the legislature. the members who belong to one party or the other go by the guidance given by their parties ; what ever may being their personal opinions.

➝ To form & run the government:- the party which gets an absolute majority in the legislature forms the government and runs the administration of the country.

If no party gets absolute majority then several party join each other to form an alliance and form a government.

➝ To shape public opinion:- political parties through their public meetings and media, educate the masses about the various problems country. Sometimes they also launched movement for the resolution of the problems faced by the people.

➝ Role of opposition:- political parties which have loss in the election, from the opposition. They criticize the government for the wrong policies and keep it under check. They also mobilize the people against the government for the wrong policies.

➝ Access off to government machinery and welfare schemes of the government:- for an ordinary citizen it is easy to contact a local party leader then a government official, local party leader helps an ordinary citizen to get his/her work done.
